20-Year-Old on Motor Scooter Struck, Killed While Waiting at Red Light in North Hollywood; Woman Arrested

A woman was booked on suspicion of murder after slamming into a man riding a motorized scooter, killing him in North Hollywood Thursday morning.

The crash was reported about 5:30 a.m. near the intersection of Vineland Avenue and Vanowen Street, Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Lisset Fuentes said.

Jessica Martinez, 24, of North Hollywood was driving a red, 2004 Audi A4 south on Vineland when she rear-ended the victim, who was stopped at a red light at the intersection with Vanowen, according to an LAPD news release.

Graphic surveillance video that captured the collision shows the Audi traveling fast as it blows through the intersection, sending sparks and the scooter rider flying. Although LAPD describes the victim’s vehicle as motorcycle, the footage it more closely resembles a Vespa.

The victim was thrown several hundred feet from the site of the impact and died at the scene.

LAPD identified him as 20-year-old Anthony Chay. A GoFundMe set up to raise money for his mother said he was on his way to film school when he was killed.

Martinez, meanwhile, had continued driving south on Vineland, where she collided with multiple vehicles parking along the west side of the road, investigators said.

The force of that impact caused a white SUV to overturn, and the Audi caught fire once it came to rest, police said.

Martinez allegedly walked away from the scene but was pursued by bystanders. She was subsequently detained, and later formally arrested, officials said.

Martinez was also treated at the hospital for minor injuries, according to police.

Investigators still have not determined how fast the vehicle was traveling when it hit the motorcyclist, but the amount of damage it caused is an indicator.

“To cause all this … it had to be at a pretty significant high rate of speed,” Fuentes said.

It was unclear if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
